Early Childhood Intervention (Ages 0β5)
Giving children the right support, at the right time.
The first 1,000 days β from conception to around two years of age β are a particularly important period for your child's brain development and neuroplasticity, the brain's natural ability to adapt, learn, and grow. During this time, the brain develops at an extraordinary pace and is especially responsive to relationships, movement, play, communication, nutrition, and everyday experiences.
This makes the first 1,000 days an important window of opportunity to support your child's development when concerns arise. At the same time, brain development and neuroplasticity continue throughout childhood. The period from birth to around five years of age therefore provides a vital opportunity to support your child's development, learning, participation, and future potential.
Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) supports young children with delayed development, developmental delays, disabilities, or other concerns β while helping parents and caregivers understand how to support their child.
ECI is more than individual therapy. ECI looks at the whole child and family, including movement, communication, play, learning, participation, and everyday life. Internationally, ECI has developed over several decades and has increasingly moved toward family-centered, play-based support within a child's natural environment.
Early intervention is about recognizing opportunities for development early and providing the right support at the right time β while working together with families to help every child grow, learn, participate, and thrive.
ECI in Ethiopia
Early Childhood Development is receiving increasing attention in Ethiopia, and important work in early learning, responsive caregiving, and early stimulation is already taking place. However, specialized, coordinated Early Childhood Intervention is still an emerging field, with limited access to specialized training and services.
At Addis Ability, we want to contribute to the development of this field and make family-centered, evidence-informed early intervention more accessible to Ethiopian families.
What Does This Mean for Your Child?
You do not have to wait for a diagnosis to seek support. We can help you understand your child's development, identify areas where they may need support, and find practical ways to encourage development in everyday life. Because the most important part of intervention is not what happens during the therapy session - it is what happens in the child's everyday life.
Support is available for your child if they are navigating:
- Global Developmental Delay & Delayed Development: Focused support across motor, cognitive, communication, social, and adaptive skills.
- Cerebral Palsy: Comprehensive assessment, early intervention, mobility support, posture management, and movement optimization.
- Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus: Targeted care for mobility, positioning, functional independence, and practical caregiver education for you and your family.
- Genetic & Rare Disorders: Specialized management for conditions including Down syndrome, LeschβNyhan syndrome, PraderβWilli syndrome, and other genetic, chromosomal, and neurodevelopmental conditions.
- Prematurity & High-Risk Infant Care: Early developmental follow-up, prevention of secondary complications, and continuous coaching for you as a caregiver.
- Neuromuscular Disorders: Focused care for conditions including muscular dystrophies, spinal muscular atrophy, and peripheral nerve disorders.
- Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD): Interventions aimed at improving your child's motor planning, coordination, and confidence in daily activities.
- Complex Medical & High Support Needs: Coordinated rehabilitation and dedicated support for children with severe physical or multiple disabilities, tracheostomies, gastrostomy feeding tubes, epilepsy, respiratory needs, and other complex health conditions.
